Reading and Viewing

EL Week 2020

English Language (EL) Week 2020 was launched on the 8th July. Our theme this year was “Making Reading Viral”. Here in Edgefield we make reading widespread and “contagious”. 

Age-appropriate activities were customised for students at all levels with safe distancing measures in mind. The P1 and P2 students had a great time competing in our yearly Spelling Bee. Further, the lower primary students listened to stories online and had activities that allowed them to connect better with others and self. The upper primary students connected with movies stories, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Gulliver’s Travel and they learned more about greed and truth versus deception.

Let’s continue making reading viral as Today a Reader, Tomorrow a Leader!

The Reading and Speaking theme launched a line-up of English Language programmes on 15th January 2020.

We believe strongly in reading for life and believe that we can nurture each child through reading – Today, a reader. Tomorrow, a leader!

Edgefielders can look forward to an array of interesting activities like

  • Mass Borrowing with NLB
  • EL Week

The speaking programmes at Edgefield Primary School aim to develop every Edgefielder as an empathetic communicator. Adopting Erik Palmer's Six Traits of Speaking©, Edgefielders familiarise themselves with Poise, Voice, Life, Eye contact, Gestures and Speed (PVLEGS©) as a guide to communicate effectively. The following speaking programmes were shared with Edgefielders during our English Language

Primary 1: Pick and Tell
Primary 2: Show and Tell
Primary 3: Public Speaking
Primary 4: Persuasive Speaking
Primary 5 & 6: Debate Programme

These enriching programmes provide every Edgefielder with the platform to showcase their speaking skills and to develop into competent and confident speakers.

2019 Books-to-Go Programme

The Books-to-Go (BTG) is an initiative of the National Library Board to bring the 
library to the school. BTG complements the school’s reading programme and 
also embraces the whole-school approach of building a reading culture. By 
encouraging students to read, the school is moving towards realizing its reading 
motto of “Today a Reader, Tomorrow a Leader”. Through reading, the students 
will be led to many paths, with new possibilities.

Late But Not Last (P5 EL STELLAR)
Having read the stellar unit titled Late but not Last, our Primary 5 pupils had the opportunity to meet our legendary Singapore athlete, Mr Canagasabai Kunalan! He could run 100metres in 10.38 seconds and participated twice in the Olympic Games!

Mr C Kunalan shared with pupils about his experience and also how he overcame all the obstacles despite the late start in his Track and Field career. Pupils were engaged during the interaction session and were eager to ask him more questions. Mr Kunalan even conducted a masterclass where he shared tips on how to run fast. 

Our pupils ended the day feeling very motivated knowing that it is never too late to achieve their best!

Reading Culture Launch 2019

The Launch was held on Wednesday, 16 January 2019.

Our overarching theme is “Today a Reader, Tomorrow a Leader – Reading for Life”. The school believes that a “Thinking School and Learning Nation” philosophy must begin with reading, and the school is committed to reading for life. The reading programmes highlighted at the launch are meant to complement the school’s EL curriculum with its main thrust of building a reading culture. The activities are:

  • Reading a book by guest readers (by both teachers and students)
  • Storytelling during the ELRD lessons (to complement the Whatsup newspapers)
  • Book Exchange (to exemplify reading as giving)
  • “Once upon a book…” (to encourage pupils to write to promote a book that they have read)

In Edgefield, it is our belief that reading is the gateway for the students to acquire the vast knowledge of the world and reading serves as the building block towards “Every child a storyteller”.

So, let’s start reading, everyone!

Reading Culture 2018

The Reading Culture Launch was held on Wednesday, 17 January 2018. This year’s theme “Score Goals for Reading” was chosen to coincide with this year’s World Cup. The programmes highlighted at the launch are meant to complement the school’s EL curriculum, with the main thrust of building a reading culture. The complementary activities are:

  • Reading a book by guest readers (by both teachers and students)
  • Storytelling during the ELRD lessons (to complement the Little Red Dot)
  • Book Exchange (to exemplify reading as giving)
  • “Once upon a book…” (to encourage pupils to write to promote a book that they have read)
  • Through these activities, we strive to develop “Every child to be an Author, a Storyteller and a

Confident Speaker”.

English Week 2017

English (EL) Week 2017 was launched on 5th July. Pupils and teachers came dressed as their favourite characters and to top it off, they came ready with the respective storybooks! One pupil from each class was awarded the Best Dressed award.

It was a great honour to have Ms Eliza Teoh, author of the best-selling series, Ellie Belly, to grace the opening of the EL week. She was definitely an inspiration to the pupils as she shared that anyone and everyone is capable of being a writer just like her! This has always been the belief of Edgefield that "Every child can be an Author".

Over the next three days, pupils had the opportunity to try out board games and even indulged in a book or two from the book fair during recess. They were challenged to try the "Speak Good English Quiz" and tokens were given to those who took up the challenge and did well! Pupils were also encouraged to borrow fiction books from the mobile library.

Launch of the Reading Programme 2017

Theme: Today a Reader, Tomorrow a Leader

The launch, which was held on 18 January 2017, is a whole-school approach to building a vibrant reading culture. The school believes that reading is foundational and opens up new vistas of knowledge. It connects the student with ideas that enriches his/her experience and broadens their horizon, and builds their self-confidence.   The school-wide reading programme embraces the overarching idea of: Learning to Read and Reading to Learn. Silent reading and library research helps to nurture self-directed learners with a lively curiosity for how things work. Through supported reading and sharing a book, students develop multiple perspectives on a variety of texts.   Our Reading @ the Quad build confidence and helps students to overcome the anxiety of reading and oral presentation to a large audience. While our Reading Marathon will challenge students to read extensively in the different genres and disciplines.   Let’s help to grow our students and leaders of tomorrow one book at a time!

School Programmes

Whatsup Reading Programme
Whatsup is an educational newspaper supplement for primary school pupils.  The journalists will customise lessons and activities each week based on the current happenings in the world for teachers to use in the classroom.  Whatsup focused on English language learning, news and current events, with elements of social emotional learning, values education and National Education – all key learning areas in the classroom experience of 8- to 12-year-olds.

Guest Reading Programme
Books come alive as teachers read aloud to the pupils during the Guest Reading sessions. The sessions are conducted during class library or class reading period. The programme was initiated with the belief that teachers as good role models can empower, enthuse, and engage pupils to inculcate a sustainable reading habit as a life skill.

Reading @ the Stage
This initiative is conducted daily and engages teacher volunteers to read aloud to the school for 10 minutes before the flag-raising ceremony. Reading aloud to pupils acts as a tuning in activity and conditions them to be attentive listeners and reflective learners as they think about the message and subtext of the narrative.

Whole School Reading Programme
Since 2013, the school has worked collaboratively with the National Library Board (NLB) to spearhead a Whole School Reading programme. This initiative focuses on the following activities:

Mass borrowing
This allows students to browse a wide variety of materials from the NLB that best fit their reading interest profile and borrow items on the spot.
