Student Development Team

Our Purpose

  • The SDT oversees the delivery of a holistic learning experience that all students undergo throughout their 6 years of education in Edgefield Primary in line with the School’s Vision Mission and Values.

  • We seek to provide a quality school experience for Edgefielders. We ensure that positive teacher-student relationship, values education and the development of socio-emotional skills form the foundation of what it means to be an Edgefielder to do the right thing; and to touch lives.

Our People

The SDT is made of the following key members.

They are also supported by members from the Case Management Team comprising the school’s FTSC and Allied Educators (Learning and Behavioural Needs)

Our Process

Experiences
Students thrive best in an environment that is safe and where positive emotions flow. We do this through affirming students for their strengths, both in character and academics. Positive emotions lead to positive engagement, and when we engage students positively, they enjoy learning; they come to school joyfully.

Developing our students
SDT looks into student well-being, and one way to do this is through Form Teacher Guidance Period (FTGP) lessons where teachers facilitate social-emotional learning (SEL). By strengthening teacher-student and student-student relationships, we will facilitate positive emotions which eventually lead to positive engagement.

Growing hearts and minds
Good character is the hallmark of an Edgefielder, especially in resilience and empathy. Every two weeks, we have an FTGP lesson and a Values Education (VE) lesson.

Empowering leaders and talents
The team in Student Discipline and Student Leadership (SDSL) looks into how students lead other students. At the school level, prefects form the pinnacle of student leaders to lead the student population, and they are from P4 to P6. At the class level, each class has a team of leaders comprising, class monitors, class ambassadors and subject champions.

Our Pursuit

Edgefielders have a SHARP cutting edge in Punggol. We develop Students who are Happy, Healthy, Appreciative, Resilient and Performing at their best. We can achieve this when we do the right things in the right way.

Our Practices & Programmes

Starting Rightly
We believe in starting on the right footing. At the start of each year, we devote the first three days of schools to ease in students at all levels and classes.  The objectives are to:
  • Start It Right
  • Monitor With Care
  • End It Well
Teachers take time to know the class, and for classmates to know one another better. Teachers are able to train students in expected behaviours, classroom and school routines and inculcate values to help them in transition to another level. Activities are designed for students to foster team spirit and class loyalty.

We believe in starting each day right. Before students at Edgefield Primary School start reading and writing, they begin the day with time to reflect and centre themselves. We do this with mindfulness breathing at morning assembly. Every morning, the school broadcasts 3 minutes of mindfulness practice whereby students are tuned into their senses, notice their thoughts and practice self -regulation.  The benefits of mindfulness are manifold. There is a greater sense of well-being, peace of mind and heightened perceptual clarity.

Saying & showing rightly
We believe that positive emotions and positive relationships are key in encouraging students and teachers to be well. We believe in affirming the strengths of teachers and students. FTGP, VE and daily interactions allow us to do this.

We believe in catching others doing right. One way we do this, is through Postcards from the Edge. Teachers write to credit students when they do the right thing to touch lives. At the end of each term, teachers validate students with ‘Praise Cards’.

Standing up for what is right
We believe that everyone has the right to be safe and to feel safe at Edgefield. We believe in being Up-Standers against any form of hurtful behaviour e.g. bullying, verbal abuse. We teach Edgefielders how to prevent hurtful behaviour, identify it and report it.

We believe in restorative practice. When students are taken to task for their misbehaviour, we believe that they can change for the better. We do this through the process of Reflection, Restitution and Restoration.

Sustaining the right accomplishments
We believe in learning for life. We prepare our students for the test of life, not a life of tests. Positive achievements include the well-being of body, mind and soul. Students will excel in their areas of strengths when they find meaning and purpose in what they do.   We have milestone programmes from Primary 1 through 6 to build up a strong foundation for holistic education. Some of these include P1 and P2 Arts Alive, Learning Journeys, MTL speech and drama and Star Reading, P3 Sleepover, P4 Adventure Camp, P5 and P6 Growing Years.
